Tokoname-yaki 常滑焼 is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, a city of pottery steeped in history with a history of over 1000 years. Tokoname-ware is a form of ceramic pottery that is produced in the area around the city of Tokoname in Aichi prefecture. This traditional craft comes from one of the Six Ancient Kilns of Japan.

In Japan, Yixing teapots were imported from the Muromachi period (1336-1573), which continued until the Meiji period (1868-1912) During the Edo period (1603-1867), the Yokote teapot came to be made. The Yokote teapots in circulation today were made after the Edo period. Later, they became the mainstream of Japanese tea containers and came to be called kyusu (teapot).

This teapot includes a mesh strainer which is designed to prevent the tea leaves from flowing out. This way the functionality of the tea strainer is not affected no matter which direction the tea leaves are pushed inside the kyusu.

Kyusu (急須) are traditional Japanese teapots mainly made of fired volcanic clay of very high quality. The word "Kyusu" simply means teapot, even though in common usage Kyusu usually does refer to a teapot with a side handle.
